In Loving Memory of God’s Servant—Elder Chang Ching

Ideeply cherish my friend in Christ—Elder Chang Ching, a Taiwanese sculptor referred to as a national treasure, and even more importantly, a servant of God’s kingdom who listens to His words. Whatever he receives, he carves into his works, revealing God’s truth through his artistry. The massive cross outside our church is one of his productions. Now he has rested and returned to the heavenly home, and we truly feel the loss!

I remember in 2012, C-Mo, Deborah, and I were taking a rest at Sun Moon Lake when we happened to come across an exhibition by Elder Chang Ching. Since C-Mo has a keen interest in art pieces, I accompanied her to attend. Upon seeing them, I realized he was a Christian sculptor. His works featured themes like Psalm 23, “How Great Thou Art,” and many others—truly precious creations. After returning to Hong Kong, we connected with him, got to know each other, and this eventually led us to think about establishing a 611 branch in Taiwan.

Before dedicating the Mercy Seat, I felt led to place one of Elder Chang Ching’s works in the main hall to manifest God’s glory. I had already thought of a sum in my heart and intended to invite him to create something for us. However, when I called him, he revealed that the Lord Jesus had already spoken to him that very morning, saying that he should gift his work “Spirit of the Almighty” to Hong Kong 611! “Spirit of the Almighty” marks a transition in his creative style—from meticulously detailed carvings in his earlier days to an impressive boldness whereby just a few strokes showcase grandeur and majesty. “Spirit of the Almighty” symbolizes the Holy Spirit, and God’s works are indeed wondrous!

In 2019, Elder Chang Ching purchased three units to establish his art gallery and graciously offered them to Yunlin 611 for future use. When we attended the memorial service, we saw that everything was completed and that the space had become our Yunlin 611 church hall, which is truly beautiful. He not only blessed Yunlin 611 but also introduced us to Pastor Peter and C-Mo Daisy, who now serve as the lead pastors for our branch in Taiwan. Indeed, it is like a grain of wheat falling to the ground and producing many grains! I see God using his life to give us many reminders, and his works remain among us, glorifying the Lord!

“The servant of God’s kingdom listens to His words; a national treasure master reveals the truth! My beloved friend, see you in heaven.” These were my words of tribute to Elder Chang Ching at the memorial service. May we all become people who willingly listen to and follow the Lord, open our lives to be sculpted by God, and become blessings to others!
