My name is Joy, I am a cell member of Rewelyn Passion.
Before I came to Hong Kong in 2018, I had to deeply consider the contract from my future employer. It said that I would be taking care of 4 children, the eldest of whom has special needs. Even though it was my desire to come to Hong Kong, I was fearful and hesitant to take this contract – but I resolved myself, saying I would give it a try, and if I couldn’t handle it, I could always terminate the contract myself and go home.
At first, the work was very difficult for me, it seemed like I was unable to handle the kids, it seemed that I didn’t know how to take good care of them. Every night, I would cry out to God, I asked Him to help me and to give me strength. I am thankful to God that every Saturday I am able to come to church, worship Him and join cell group.
As my employers are busy, most of the times, I take care of the children especially the one with special needs. I have developed a close relationship with him, for example, he asks questions and never stops until he gets an answer! I teach him to say thank you, please, and sorry. He’s very cute and obedient. The longer I stay with him, the more I find things he can do!
I have found he’s intelligent, teachable, and a fast learner – and I learn many things from him too! He is very helpful to me, his company makes my work easy. He helps me to cook, to clean, to go shopping, to take out the trash. We go out together for walks, to relax, and for me to pray for him.
I have learned that he can deeply feel about what others do, that he can be emotionally hurt. Special-needs kids need love, kindness, and patience. The experience of caring for him has changed me. Through him, I learn to love, to understand, and to have patience. I praise the Lord that his tantrums are less often than before. He’s a very happy and joyful boy – he’s not a burden, rather he is a special treasure!
I thank God for bringing me into this loving family. My employers always tell me how blessed they are to have me – and I truthfully tell them that I’m also so blessed to be in this family, as they treat me not just as a helper, but as part of the family. Through them, I learn deeper about God’s love and mercy, and my life draws nearer to God. To God be all the Glory!
